One Manchester is a provider of housing and community services. Formed in April 2015 from an historic merger between two of Manchester’s largest housing associations – City South and Eastlands Homes, we currently own and manage more than 12,000  homes in central, south and east Manchester.

KrakenFlex, part of Octopus Group, was founded in 2014 (originally as ‘Upside Energy’) for the Nesta Dynamic Demand Challenge and quickly gained attention for their ability to connect and control a diverse range of energy assets at scale. Funding followed from bodies such as Innovate UK and DECC Energy Entrepreneurs, with the aim of building out the Upside platform to facilitate the rapidly growing UK energy flexibility markets. KarakenFlex are leading on the development of the systems required to store, aggregate, monitor and notionally control the energy storage systems and heat pumps being installed. As part of this, KrakenFlex will define overall architecture and communications protocols between their cloud service and heat pumps and batteries. This will include a control strategy for gathering data from and sending control signals to batteries and heat pumps. They will also test and refine cloud software to support these communications protocols and control strategies to ultimately integrate the equipment and undertake ‘real world’ testing. As well as monitoring the energy storage systems, the data gathered and control systems implemented will allow consultants working for the project to compare the status of the heat pumps and batteries with the frequency of the national and local electrical network and engage with energy supply companies to enable the modelling of the likely impact, including revenue, of grid balancing and other network services offered by these aggregated energy stores.

Retrofit Works is a not-for-profit cooperative who offers its services at the lowest possible cost to lower energy bills, create healthy homes and achieve Net Zero. Active and innovating since 2013, they’ve been working tirelessly to improve the environment for contractors, homeowners, and everyone in between across the UK to make it easier to change homes for the better.

They will lead on the development of the property survey and energy assessment methodology and the performance-based specifications for the different work items that comprise this measure and the quality control and completion handover procedure. Retrofit Works will also liaise and involve other Delivery Partners, notably the social housing Registered Providers and University of Salford regarding the performance monitoring data that needs to be collected from the dwellings. RetrofitWorks are also leading on delivery of whole house retrofits to 20 owner occupied properties.

Stockport Homes Group manage the housing stock owned by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. Stockport Homes Group are installing whole house retrofits, heat pumps, insulation systems and PV and battery systems into the properties they manage and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council are providing the match funding required by the project.

Northwards Housing manages over 12,500 City Council homes across north Manchester. Formerly an ‘arms-length management organisation (ALMO), Northwards is now part of Manchester City Council. Northwards are installing whole house retrofits, heat pumps and PV and battery systems into the properties they manage, and Manchester City Council are providing the match funding required by the project.

The University of Salford has a global reach, but also a history that is firmly embedded in the industrial past of Greater Manchester. The University community encompasses over 23,000 students, 2500 staff and 170,000 alumni who come to study, teach and research in Salford from all around the world. With industry-focused research the University is transforming lives through education and research or working with partners to address major challenges like poverty, homelessness, low carbon and health innovation. The University will lead on the detailed development of the monitoring requirements for the project, including a data sharing protocol that will comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (May 2018). They will also develop a comprehensive monitoring package for those properties that undergo a deep retrofit and those with Heat Pumps implemented. The University will provide data analysis to ensure properties are behaving as expected post installation.

In addition, an element of ‘consumer insight’ will be included within this Work Package. Delivered in two phases, this component will test tenants experience pre and post installation and overall customer satisfaction.
